Marmots are members of the genus Marmota, in the rodent family of squirrels. Marmots are generally large ground squirrels. Those most often referred to as marmots tend to live in mountainous areas such as the Sierra Nevadas in the United States or the European Alps. Marmots typically live in burrows, and hibernate there through the winter. Most marmots are highly social, and use loud whistles to communicate with one another, especially when alarmed. Interestingly, marmots, rather than rats, were the primary carriers of the Bubonic plague during several historic outbreaks, but the rats got the blame.
On January 28th, 2004 the National Bank of Poland issued this 2 Zlote Nordic Gold coin as part of the “Animals of the World” series. Featured on this coin is the Harbor Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena L.), a marine mammal and the only species of cetaceans living in the Baltic Sea. Would make a nice gift for any collectors of wildlife or world coins.
The XXVIII Olympics were held in Australia in 2000, and world coins from many nations were issued to mark the event. This particular piece features runners. Would make a nice gift for collectors of Olympic or world coins.
The clipper design on the reverse of this coin is an elegant rendering of the reverse of a 1936 5 Zlotych coin which was issued in that year to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Gdynia Seaport. The obverse depicts another Clipper, the training ship Dar Pomorza. Would make a nice gift for collectors of ship or world coins.
Of course Poland has to have a soccer Crown. The enthusiasm for European integration in this former Warsaw Pact linch-pin does nothing but pale in comparison to their fanatic embrace of world football. This Nordic Gold, 2 Zloty Crown shows Poland, not in its rightful geographical perspective in Europe, but located dead center on a soccer ball. Now there’s a commitment to Polish and “world” soccer. If you are a soccer fan, or a collector of world coins with a niche open for sports-related world coins then this simple yet brazen world coin belongs in your collection.

Probably the most recognized Polish coin ever minted! I have been able to obtain a few of these coins directly from Poland. One of my best friends has carried one around on his keyring for years! Would make a great gift for that special Pole or world coins collector in your life, even if that happens to be you.
The Eurasian Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) is a species of horned owl resident in much of Europe and Asia. The Eagle Owl is a very large and powerful bird, only slightly smaller than the Golden Eagle. It is the largest species of owl with a wingspan of up to seven feet. Adults can weigh in excess of eight pounds, in comparison the common Barn Owl weighs about a pound. It mainly feeds on small mammals but will take prey up to the size of foxes and young deer. It will also take many other birds including other birds of prey. It is largely nocturnal and is found in mountains and forests with cliffs and rocky areas. It usually nests on cliff ledges. They live for around twenty years although like many other bird species in captivity they can live much longer, perhaps up to sixty years. The Eagle Owl’s scientific name comes from its deep booming call. Named for their call the Bubo bubo owl ranges from throughout Europe across Russia to its Pacific coast, South to Iran and Pakistan and into China and the Koreas. Would make a nice gift for any collectors of wildlife or world coins.
