Italy – Composer Gaspare Spontini Bronze Portrait Medal – With Presentation Case – 1829 – XF+ A very fine original portrait medal of the celebrated composer of La Vestale. 51.5 mm, the edge 7 mm. Recto featuring a raised portrait bust and the text: “SPONTINIO EQUITI CLARO PRIMO MUSICI AGONIS SUI DIRECTORI / HAL. SAXON. D.X – SEPT. MDCCCXXIX” and signed “C. LOOS DIR.” The verso with a laurel wreath and the text around the border: “LYRICAE TRAGOEDIAE PRINCIPI GERMANIA MERITORUM CULTRIX,” with inside the wreath: “VESTALIS / CORTES / OLYMPIA / NURMAHAL / ALCIDOR / AGNES STAUF / MILTON / CET.” Andorfer & Epstein 288. Comes as shown in an antique presentation case.
Great Britain – Queen Victoria – Jubilee – 1897 – Bronze & Silver – 2 Medal Set – Wonderful Set of 2 Medals to commemorate the Jubilee Celebration signifying 60 Years as reigning Queen for Victoria. Medal by G.W. De Saulles adapted from T. Brock and W. Wyon. Bronze medal is 56 mm and Silver medal is 26 mm.
GUSTAV NOSKE (KIENAST-253). Social Democratic Minister of Defense from 1919-1920. Brutally attacked the left-wing in Germany. Goetz commemorates the reestablishment of the Reichswehr following the Versailles Treaty. Obverse: “We remain 3 (true).” Reverse: “Get all into the Reichswehr.”

France – Exposition Francaise a Moscow – 64mm Bronze Medal – 1891 – Louis-Oscar Roty – Exposition Francaise, Moscow, Bronze Medal, 1891, designed and signed by Louis-Oscar Roty, renowned French medalist (1846-1911) who at one time worked for Tiffany & Company in New York. In addition to his many medallic offerings, he also designed the “Semeuse” image – the woman sowing seeds – that used to appear on most French silver coins. The obverse depicts a seated female figure representing Moscow welcoming La France. The reverse shows two shields, the one on the left with the Russian coat-of-arms and the shield on the right with the French national emblem. The medal is 64 millimeters in diameter, weighs 104 grams and is in Extremely Fine condition.

Absolutely gorgeous set of Chinese Lunar Series medals, all housed in a quality wood presentation case.
The medal was engraved by Pieroni da Lucca F., a famous Italian medalist of the time. It has a 42.44 millimeter diameter and weighs 31 grams.

France – Insurance Company – Octagonal Silver Medal by Barre – 1830 – 19.4 Grams – 36.28 mm – Interesting octagonal silver medal commissioned by the Compagnie Royale D’Assurances (Royal Insurance Company) founded in 1817. Created by French medalist and sculptor Jean Jacques Barre (1793-1855) who apprenticed to Thiolier at the age of seventeen and made such rapid progress that scarcely a year elapsed without some of his work appearing at the annual Fine Art Exhibitions at Paris. From 1842 until his death in 1855 he was Graveur General des Medailles (Chief Engraver of Medals) at the Paris Mint. This is just one of many beautiful medals I acquired on a recent trip to a coin show in Verona, Italy.

Italy – Livorno – Firenze – High Relief Copper Medal – 1496 /1896 – 43.7 Grams – 44.52 mm – Beautiful high relief medal, just one of many I recently purchased at a coin show in Verona, Italy. This medal was issued by the city of Firenze and the reverse reads “1496-1896 – A Livorno, fedele sorella nella difesa del libero comune e nella Italiana unita,” which translated means “To Livorno, faithful sister in the defense of a free community and a united Italy.” The medal was struck in copper, weighs 43.7 grams and has a 44.52 millimeter diameter. I grade the medal About Uncirculated.

Legend: EDOUARD . I . D . G. ANG . ET .HIB . REX. (Edward I, by the grace of God, King of England and Ireland). Rev: A circular temple with three niches containing statues of Minerva (for Edward’s wisdom and military genius), Prudence and Hercules (an allusion to the magnitude and variety of Edward’s enterprizes). At one side History is recording Edward’s deeds while two onlookers admire the monument on the other side. Exergue: NAT. 1230 . COR. 1272. MORT. 1307. (Born 1230, crowned 1272, died 1307).
