Sierra Leone 2005 Legal Tender Wildlife Crown Giraffe 2005 BU

$16.99

One of the four wildlife crowns issued by Sierra Leone in 2005, this coin has a legal tender value of $1 in its country of origin. Africa has such a diversity of wildlife and so many different species can be seen as emblematic of the continent, but the giraffe has always caused such marvel and is such a singularity, existing no where else in the world. With its long neck (with the same 7 vertebrae as humans) a giraffe can feed from the tops of trees and also drink the morning dew from the upper leaves at their favorite time to feed. They can go for weeks without drinking from any other source. When they do visit a watering hole they have to engage in the awkward endeavor of getting their treetop high heads down below their feet. It’s not just a question of position.Their neck veins contain valves and a network of tiny veins that prevent them from suffering blackouts or vertigo when they lower their heads.

Sierra Leone Legal Tender Dinosaur Crown Stegosaurus 2006 BU

$16.99

Stegosaurus, from the Greek meaning “roof-lizard” because of the plates on its back, was a genus of large herbivorous dinosaurs from the Upper Jurassic of North America. It is among the most easily identifiable dinosaurs due to the distinctive double row of kite-shaped plates along the animal’s back and the long spikes on its tail. Stegosaurus was the largest stegosaur, measuring up to forty feet in length and weighing up to 12,000 pounds. The plates of Stegosaurus were highly modified bony-cored scales, similar to those seen in crocodiles and many lizards today. The largest plates were found over the animal’s hips and measured two feet by two feet. There has been some debate over the purpose of the plates, whith some proponents of the theory that the plates were meant to intimidate enemies. A later theory suggests that they were part of the dinosaur’s cooling system. The tail appears to have acted as a weapon and included four to eight spikes each about two to three feet long, an arrangement known as a thagomizer. The skull of Stegosaurus was long and narrow, and its head was carried close to the ground, probably no higher than three feet off the ground. Interestingly, the brain of Stegosaurus was about the size of a walnut.

Sierra Leone The Big Five Lion 2001 $1- Br. Uncirculated Prooflike Coin

$19.99

While anyone who has ever loved a pet cat can understand the beauty and mystery of these amazing creatures, the “big cats” of the world have long inspired the wonderment of all people. There is something awe-inspiring about these “cats” to which we would be but another possible meal. I once saw a tapestry which depicted Sampson’s struggles with an Arabian Lion. The idea of a man slaying or even fending off such a creature with no more than the jawbone of an ass seemed miraculous in itself. Later I saw an actual Arabian Lion at the zoo (they are extinct in the wild) and I was in shock at the immensity and the restless power of the creature. This wonderful world coin from the “Big Five” series of Sierra Leone captures beautifully the power and uniqueness of these splendid creatures. If you are a lover of cats, wildlife, or world coins then this wonderful coin depicting the head of a lion would be a great addition to your world coin collection.
