Sierra Leone 2005 Legal Tender Wildlife Crown Giraffe 2005 BU

One of the four wildlife crowns issued by Sierra Leone in 2005, this coin has a legal tender value of $1 in its country of origin. Africa has such a diversity of wildlife and so many different species can be seen as emblematic of the continent, but the giraffe has always caused such marvel and is such a singularity, existing no where else in the world. With its long neck (with the same 7 vertebrae as humans) a giraffe can feed from the tops of trees and also drink the morning dew from the upper leaves at their favorite time to feed. They can go for weeks without drinking from any other source. When they do visit a watering hole they have to engage in the awkward endeavor of getting their treetop high heads down below their feet. It’s not just a question of position.Their neck veins contain valves and a network of tiny veins that prevent them from suffering blackouts or vertigo when they lower their heads.
