One of the authors of the Edict of Milan that granted official toleration to Christians in the Roman Empire, for the majority of his reign he was the rival of Constantine I. He was finally defeated at the Battle of Adrianople, before being executed on the orders of Constantine I.

His record in dealing with those crises is mixed, as he won a number of military victories but was unable to keep much of his realm from seceding.
