Flavius Claudius Constantinus, second son of Constantine II, was born in 316 CE in Arelate. Viennensis (modern day Arles, France). He served as Roman Emperor from 337 to 340 CE. His eldest brother was slain on order of his father in 326 and in 337 Constantine II and his brothers, Constans and Constantius II divided up the Roman Empire amongst themselves with each brother adopting the title Augstus. Constantine II ruled Britain, Gaul and Spain, but he quickly warred against Constans and seized Africa and then launched a surprise invasion of the Italian penensula itself. It was at Aquileia that Constantine met the vangaurd of Constans’ army and in battle was slain.
