Palau – Endangered Wildlife – Streaked Spinefoot Fish – $1 – 2011 – Brilliant Uncirculated – Color! – Streaked Spinefoot fish, commonly known as Rabbitfish, grow to about 16 inches and have small, rabbit-like mouths, large dark eyes, and a shy temperament which gives them their name; the scientific name Siganus is simply the Latin term by which Mediterranean rabbitfish were known in Ancient Rome. Most species have either bright colors or a complex and interesting pattern. Rabbitfishes are found in shallow lagoons in the Indo-Pacific and eastern Mediterranean. Another unusual feature among Streaked Spinefoot is their pelvic fins, which are formed from two spines, with 3 soft rays between them. The fin spines are equipped with well-developed venom glands, which although not life-threatening to adult humans, can cause severe pain. All rabbitfish are diurnal, some live in school, while others live more solitary lives among the corals. They are herbivorous, feeding on benthic algae in the wild. It is very widespread in its distribution, known from the very northern reaches of the Gulf of Alaska, to the Pacific side of the Baja California peninsula, north of Guerrero Negro. The copper rockfish is also very widely distributed in depth, from the sub-tidal shallows to over 600 feet. Copper rockfish are known to be highly variable in coloration, ranging from a dark reddish brown, with pale copper blotching along the sides, to a lighter pinkish brown with a yellowish white mottling on the flanks. Males are known to mature between three and seven years, while females mature between four and eight years. Generally the larger a female, the more young she will bear. Copper Rockfish are a viviparous fish giving birth to live young after a gestation period of around 10 months. They are a long lived fish reaching ages of over forty years. Copper Rockfish are a modest fish reaching a maximum size of just twenty-two inches and a weight of ten pounds. Juveniles are almost exclusively found in kelp beds and shallow rocky areas. They begin life feeding primarily on planktonic crustaceans. As they grow they continue to feed on increasingly larger crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs as well as squid and octopus. Smaller fish also make up a large part of their diet. In turn copper rockfish are preyed on by lingcod and cabezone and even salmon. Sea birds and sea mammals also take their toll, and also man. The adult copper rockfish is found very close to the bottom, are almost always found in and around rocks and almost never on sand. This rockfish is known to be very faithful to its chosen home and numerous tagging studies have shown that these rockfish travel no more than a mile from their chosen location. Palau – Endangered Wildlife – Anemonefish – $1 – 2011 – Brilliant Uncirculated – Color! – Anemonefish are a unique group of fish that live amongst the tentacles of sea anemones. The anemone’s tentacles sting and paralyze most fish that brush against them. Fortunately, they have a layer of mucus covering their skin that prevents the anemones from stinging them. By seeking shelter amongst the sea anemone’s tentacles, the anemone fish are protected from other predatory fish that might otherwise see them as a meal. They are never found far from the protection of their host anemone. Scientists believe that these fish provide benefits to the anemones as well. The anemonefish drops scraps of food as it eats and the anemone cleans up the leftovers. Very territorial, they drive off butterfly fish and other anemone-eating fishes. Tuvalu – Young Collectors – Pirate Henry Morgan – $1 – 2011 – BU Color Coin – Display Card – This coin portrays Sir Henry Morgan, one of history’s most ruthless pirates. Morgan was born to a Welsh farming family in about 1635. Admiral and privateer Morgan made a name for his activities in the Caribbean. He was one of the most successful and pitiless pirates who sailed in the Spanish Main. Notorious for his habit of torturing hapless captives for information, he was knighted for his role in maintaining British interests in the sacking of Panama in 1670. Morgan accumulated several plantations and immense wealth, paid for by his ill-gotten “pieces-of-eight”. Fond of rum, differing reports have Morgan dying of “dropsy” or tuberculosis in 1688. Morgan was buried in Palisades Cemetery in Jamaica. Ironically, the cemetery disappeared when it sank beneath the waves in the earthquake of 1692. Struck by the Perth Mint from aluminium-bronze, the coin is issued as legal tender under authority of the government of Tuvalu and comes on a display card as shown.
