S. Georgia & S. Sandwich Islands – Blue Whale – 2 Pounds – 2013 – Titanium Coin – Case – COA – As issued by authority of the Government of the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands in 2013. This legal tender Two Pound coin features the Blue Whale. The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is a marine mammal belonging to the suborder of baleen whales. At almost 100 feet in length and 190 tons or more in weight, it is the largest known animal to have ever existed. Long and slender, the blue whale’s body can be various shades of bluish-grey dorsally and somewhat lighter underneath. As with other baleen whales, its diet consists almost exclusively of small crustaceans known as krill. Blue whales were abundant in nearly all the oceans on Earth until the beginning of the twentieth century. For over a century, they were hunted almost to extinction by whalers until protected by the international community in 1966. This coin was struck from 10 grams of titanium, infused with a special dye to create the blue metal appearance. Total mintage worldwide was limited to 5,000 coins. It comes as shown in a Mint issued presentation case with a Certificate of Authenticity.

The country’s coins are mounted on an 8″ by 11 1/2″ card with a cancelled Postal Cache in the upper right hand corner. The back of the card gives all of the coin specifications. The set also includes a descriptive card that gives a brief history of the country as well as a regional map showing the country’s location relative to neighboring countries. All of the coins in this set were obtained directly from the country’s Central Bank and have never been in circulation. This beautiful set would make an excellent addition to any school project or collection of world coins.
