The U.S. Modern Commemorative Coin Program began in 1982 with the issuance of the George Washington Commemorative Half Dollar, recognizing the 250th anniversary of his birth. Modern Commemorative coins have been issued as Half Dollar and One Dollar coins in copper-nickel and silver, as well as Five and Ten Dollar coins in gold.
Since that time, the United States Treasury has raised over a half a billion dollars in surcharges in order to fund multiple projects like the Vietnam War Memorial, preserve historical sites like George Washington’s home, support various Olympic programs, and much more.
