The set comes with four individually numbered Certificates of Authenticity in a super high-gloss wooden presentation case, truly a spectacular numismatic piece of golf history. Captained by Fred Couples, the Americans won the event 19 to 13, avenging the defeat they suffered at the Royal Melbourne course in 1998.

France – Insurance Company – Octagonal Silver Medal by Barre – 1830 – 19.4 Grams – 36.28 mm – Interesting octagonal silver medal commissioned by the Compagnie Royale D’Assurances (Royal Insurance Company) founded in 1817. Created by French medalist and sculptor Jean Jacques Barre (1793-1855) who apprenticed to Thiolier at the age of seventeen and made such rapid progress that scarcely a year elapsed without some of his work appearing at the annual Fine Art Exhibitions at Paris. From 1842 until his death in 1855 he was Graveur General des Medailles (Chief Engraver of Medals) at the Paris Mint. This is just one of many beautiful medals I acquired on a recent trip to a coin show in Verona, Italy.

Japanese Sumo Wrestling is one of the oldest martial arts in Japan. Sumo wrestlers were a favorite subject on Japanese woodblock prints. Sumo wrestling is enjoying rising popularity – comparable to basketball in North America or soccer in Europe. Sumo has its roots in the Shinto religion. The matches were dedicated to the gods in prayers for a good harvest. The oldest written records date back to the 8th century. But the early forms of the Sumo tradition are probably more than 1500 years. Sumo prints from the 18th and 19th century prove the popularity of the sport in the past. During the last two decades the art of Sumo wrestling was able to establish itself even outside of Japan. Akebono, an American born in Hawaii, became the first American champion to reach the highest rank. This is the premiere of famous Japanese woodblock prints depicted on a legal tender coin.
