Liberia Pioneers Of The West Series Daniel Boone 1996 $1 Crown Unc

$14.99

Daniel Boone (1734 – 1820) was the quintessential American pioneer and trailblazer. Born November 2, 1734 in a cabin near present day Reading, Pennsylvania, Daniel Boone learned the skills of a woodsman from an early age. While still a boy he hunted as an expert for game to feed his family and grew to know the risks and opportunities required for survival in the wilds of the American continent. Married to a pioneer woman, Rebecca Bryan, at the age of 22 Boone epitomized the life of the stalwart frontier father. In 1769 Boone was taken on as a guide in an expedition to establish the best overland route to Kentucky. Making their way through the Cumberland Gap into the heart of the Appalachians Boone realized that they had ventured into a paradise of a wilderness. In 1775 Boone returned with his family and established the fort and settlement of Boonesborough. When the Revolutionary War broke out Boone found himself and his family drawn into the frontier struggle when a band of Shawnee warriors, encouraged by the British to harass colonial settlements, kidnapped Boone’s daughter. Within two days Boone had caught up to the raiding party and successfully rescued the young hostages. He was later captured by the same tribe, escaped, and used the intelligence he had gather to bolster Boonesborough’s defenses against an attack by combined British and Shawnee forces. Boonesborough survived attack and a 10 day siege, impressing the Shawnee enough to cause them and subsequently the British to abandon their goal of the settlement’s destruction. After the War he traveled west after loosing all of his Kentucky property in litigation once Kentucky was admitted into the Union. He took his family deep into Spanish controlled Missouri to St. Louis. His holdings in this territory were lost once it became part of the Union as his creditors in Kentucky were intent on gaining all they could though the pursuit of renewed litigation. Daniel Boone died on September 26, 1820 at the age of 85. In 1845 the remains of Boone and his wife were moved to Kentucky to rest in the great pioneer’s “hunter’s paradise.”

Isle of Man Explorer Leif Eiriksson Proof Silver Crown 1996 Box and COA

$44.99

While most people believe that America was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, we now know that the Vikings and Leif Eriksson reached the shores of North America 500 years before Columbus. Leif was probably born in Iceland about 970-980 but as a child he moved with his parents to Greenland. It was a tradition that young Viking men make a voyage back to Norway, the land of their ancestors. Leif traveled to Norway in 999 and stayed with King Olav Trygvasson. As one story goes, as Leif was sailing back to Greenland he was driven off course and accidentally found new lands. In one place there were fields of wild wheat and grapevines. For many years archaeologists had looked for Viking evidence in America but none had been found until 1961 when at the northern tip of Newfoundland, at a place called “L’Anse aux Meadows” evidence of buildings, jewelry, tools, slag iron, and coal were found confirming the presence of the Vikings! This beautiful silver coin was issued by authority of the government of the Isle of Man and has a legal tender value of 1 Crown. Minted in 1996, it is part of the Explorers series and features the bust of Leif Eiriksson. This coin comes in a mint issued display case with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Isle of Man Explorer Vasco Da Gama Proof Silver Crown Box and COA 1998

Vasco da Gama (1460-1524) was a Portuguese explorer who discovered an ocean route from Portugal to the East. He sailed from Lisbon, Portugal, on July 8, 1497, heading to the East. At the time, many people thought that his trip would be impossible because it was assumed that the Indian Ocean was not connected to any other seas. Da Gama rounded Africa’s Cape of Good Hope on November 22, and continued on to India, arriving in India on May 20, 1498. This beautiful silver coin was issued by authority of the government of the Isle of Man and has a legal tender value of 1 Crown. Minted in 1998, it is part of the Explorer series and features the bust of Vasco da Gama, an African map, and a ship, on the reverse. This coin comes in a mint issued display case with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Isle Of Man Commemorating the Voyages of Nansen & his Ship The Fram 1 Crown 1997

$44.99

Fridtjof Nansen (born October 10, 1861 in Store Fren, near Kristiania, now Oslo – died May 13, 1930 in Lysaker, outside Oslo) was a Norwegian explorer, scientist and diplomat. Nansen was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 for his work as a League of Nations High Commissioner. Nansen had the polar vessel “Fram” built with a rounded hull, designed so as to prevent the ice from pressing it down. In 1893, Nansen allowed the “Fram” to be frozen into the drift ice north of Siberia in the hope that it would drift over or close to the North Pole. However, it soon became evident that the ship was drifting too far south. With one companion, Hjalmar Johansen, Nansen left the “Fram” and the rest of the crew, and set off to ski to the North Pole. They got further north than anyone had been before, but drifting ice and lack of food forced them to turn back and seek the mainland. They survived two winters by shooting walruses and polar bears. By an incredible stroke of luck, they stumbled across a British expedition, headed by Frederick George Jackson, on Frans Josefs Land, which took them back to Norway. The “Fram” also reached home safely with its whole crew intact. Although the North Pole had not been reached, Nansen was celebrated as a polar hero to an even greater extent than before, both nationally and internationally. In Kristiania he was received at the palace by King Oscar, and on the palace balcony accepted the plaudits of the enormous crowd assembled outside.
