Isle of Man – Winston Churchill – Crown – 1974 – Uncirculated
The Liberation of Paris in World War II took place in late August 1944, marking the end of Operation Overlord. With the Allies rapidly advancing on Paris, the Paris Métro, Gendarmerie and Police went on strike on 15 August, followed by the postal workers the following day. They were joined by workers across the city when a general strike broke out on 18 August, the day on which all Parisians were ordered to mobilize. Barricades began to appear, with skirmishes between them and the German occupiers beginning in earnest the following day, reaching their height on the 22nd.
In 1985 the Isle of Man began issuing coinage honoring Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and significant events within her life. It is a wonderful, nostalgic series that can be appreciated by any admirer of the House of Windsor and the Queen Mother, as well as those whose lives can find some reflection in the notable events this dynamic woman’s life has spanned. This brilliant uncirculated legal tender Crown is but one in this commemorative series and would be a welcome addition to any collection of world coins.

This dramatic uncirculated commemorative Crown was issued by the government of the Isle of Man to honor the soldiers of World War II who exemplified the bravery and self-sacrifice that saw the allies to victory over the forces of Fascism. This Crown bears the impression of The Croix de Guerre imposed over a scene depicting several scenes of heroic struggle between the French Resistance and the German occupying forces. The Croix de guerre is a military decoration of both Belgium and France which was first created in 1915. The decoration was awarded throughout World War I and again during World War II. The Croix de guerre was also commonly bestowed to foreign military forces allied to France and Belgium. The Croix de guerre may either be bestowed as an individual medal or as a unit award. The Croix de guerre medal is awarded to those individuals who distinguish themselves by acts of heroism involving combat with enemy forces. The medal is also awarded to those who have been “mentioned in dispatches”, meaning a heroic deed was performed meriting a citation from an individual’s headquarters unit. The unit award of the Croix de guerre was issued to military commands who performed heroic deeds in combat and were subsequently recognized by headquarters.

This Crown bears the impression of The White Rose of Finland imposed over a scene depicting the Finnish resistance fighters in winter camouflage boldly opposing a counter-assault by a German Panzer unit across a small, wooded fiord. The Order of the White Rose of Finland was established by Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim in his capacity as regent (temporary head of state) on January 28, 1919. The order’s rules and regulations were confirmed on May 16, 1919, and its present rules date from June 1, 1940. The revised scale of ranks was confirmed most recently in 1985. The decorations were designed by Akseli Gallen-Kallela. The honor can be granted for military as well as civilian merit.

This dramatic uncirculated commemorative Crown was issued by the government of the Isle of Man to honor the soldiers of World War II who exemplified the bravery and self-sacrifice that saw the allies to victory over the forces of Fascism. This Crown bears the impression of The George Cross imposed over a scene depicting the British suffering and resilience during the Battle of Britain. King George VI instituted the George Cross for “acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger” when the population of Britain was subjected to mass bombing by the German Luftwaffe in 1940. This award, second only to the Victoria Cross (Great Britain’s highest military decoration), is usually given to civilians and may be bestowed posthumously. It consists of a silver cross, with one side portraying Saint George slaying the Dragon and the inscription: “For Gallantry;” and on the other side, the name of the holder and the date of the award. The Island of Malta was awarded the George Cross during World War II for displaying heroism in resisting hostile attacks.
On 2 May 1945, after one of the most intense battles in human history, the guns at last stopped firing amongst the ruins of Berlin. According to Soviet veterans, the silence that followed the fighting was literally deafening. Less than four years after his attack on the Soviet Union, Hitler’s self-proclaimed thousand-year Reich had ceased to exist.
” What General Weygand has called the Battle of France is over. The Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour.” Winston Churchill House of Commons, June18th 1940
The American built Douglas C-47 Dakota was adapted from the DC-3 Dakota commercial airliner. It was named the Douglas C-47 Skytrain by the US Army, designated the R4D by the USN, and was commonly referred to as “Gooney Bird” by American troops. It was one of the most successful aircraft designed and built, and had great longevity. The last C-47 was retired from the American Air Force in 1975, however they continue to see commercial service all over the world.
The Curtiss P-40 was the first fighter flown in action against the Japanese forces in Burma before the official US entry into WW2. As wartime experience in the P-40 mounted, Curtiss made many modifications. Engineers added armor plate, better self-sealing fuel tanks, and more powerful engines. They modified the cockpit to improve visibility and changed the armament package to six, wing-mounted, .50 caliber machine guns. The P-40E Kittyhawk was the first model with this gun package and it entered service in time to serve in the AVG. The last model produced in quantity was the P-40N, the lightest P-40 built in quantity, and much faster than previous models. Curtiss built a single P-40Q. It was the fastest P-40 to fly (679 kph/422 mph) but it could not match the performance of the P-47 Thunderbolt and the P-51 Mustang so Curtiss ended development of the P-40 series with this model. In addition to the AAF, many Allied nations bought and flew P-40s including England, France, China, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, and Turkey.

The Dieppe Raid during World War II, was an Allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe, France on August 19, 1942. Over 6,000 infantrymen, predominantly Canadian, were supported by large British naval and air contingents. Intended to seize and hold a major port for a short period, both to prove it was possible and to gather intelligence from prisoners and captured materials while assessing the German responses, the raid was also intended to use air power to draw the Luftwaffe into a large, planned encounter. The raid was generally considered to be an unmitigated tactical disaster, with no major objectives accomplished and 4,384 of the 6,086 men who made it ashore killed, wounded, or captured. The RAF and RCAF failed to lure the Luftwaffe into open battle, and lost 119 planes, while the Royal Navy suffered 555 casualties. During World War II the North African Campaign, also known as the Desert War, took place in the North African desert from September 13, 1940 until May 13, 1943. Fighting in this region began with Italian attacks on British occupied areas. When the Italians suffered terrible reverses, the German Afrika Korps commanded by Field Marshall Erwin Rommel came to their assistance. After a back-and-forth series of battles for control of Libya and parts of Egypt, British Commonwealth forces under the command of General Bernard Montgomery eventually pushed the Axis forces back to Tunisia.
