Elephants have appeared on coins since the time of Julius Caesar and the Roman Empire. During World War II the Belgian Congo issued two elephant coins, a brass hexagonal 2 Francs coin as well as a 50 Francs silver coin. Since then multiple countries have authorized the issuance of legal tender elephant coins. Among them are Zambia and the Somali Republic, both of which have authorized the issuance of a series of elephant coins on an annual basis. South Africa has issued elephant coins as part of their Big Five series and several Southeast Asia countries have used the pachyderms on circulating coinage as well as paper money.

There is something about elephants that never fails to capture the power of human wonderment and imagination. Their sheer size and power are obviously a key factor, but the tenderness and care they exhibit to their kin suggests to us a characteristic usually held as purely human – the ability to feel compassion and to hold another in memory, even when they are no longer with us. This wonderful world coin from the “Big Five” series of Sierra Leone bearing the image of a mother elephant and her young calf captures beautifully the power and uniqueness of these splendid creatures. If you are interested in elephants, world wildlife, or coins of Africa then this brilliant uncirculated Crown would be a meaningful addition to your world coin collection.
