We’re all familiar with the brontosaurus, one of the earliest dinosaurs to make it big in film and TV. Remember Bedrock and Fred’s pet dino? Oddly enough the brontosaurus technically never existed as such. The proper appelation of this Sauropod is “Apatosaurus,” “Brontosaurus” being the misnomer that occurred due to a case of mistaken identity. In 1874 O. C. Marsh unearthed a nearly complete sauropod skeleten and dubbed it “Brontosaurus.” The Brontosaurus became one of the most identifiable and popular of all dinosaurs. In 1903, however, scientists determined that Brontosaurus fossils were not from a new species, but from a dinosaur already discovered, the Apatosaurus. To add to the confusion Marsh had no skull for his Bronto/Apatosaurus find and substituted the skull of another sauropod, Camarasaurus, in a museum display. It was not until the 1970’s that this was discovered and a more proper picture of the Apatosaurus was able to be presented. The name “Brontosaurus” was not formally removed from the records of paleontology until 1974.—Apatosaurus (Deceptive Lizard) weighed as much as 30 tons and measured up to 21 metres (70 feet) long.. All Sauropods were plant eaters.
