The 2016-W Gold Mercury Dime was struck to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Mercury Dimes, first struck in 1916. The obverse and reverse of the 2016-W Gold Mercury Dime have the same depiction as the 1916 Mercury Dime. However, the 2016 Gold Mercury Dime is composed of 24 karat gold and weighs one tenth troy ounce. The Mercury Dimes were composed of mostly silver content and were made for circulation. While the 2016 Gold Mercury Dimes were only sold to collectors.
The 2016-W Gold Mercury Dimes were officially released by the U.S. Mint on Wednesday, June 17, 2016. Each dime had an issue price of $205. directly from the U.S. Mint. The U.S. Mint imposed a 10 coin limit per household. The dimes sold out within less than an hour on the first day of sales. The maximum authorized mintage was set at 125,000.
