The coin’s reverse portrays a Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyprorhynchus banksii) in color. A raucous, noisy black parrot, the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is found throughout Australia where it lives in a variety of habitats — temperate forests, woodlands and dense tropical rain-forests. Large flocks are often observed in the morning or just before dusk. Breeding pairs prefer the isolation of a solitary old gum tree hollow in which to nest. Females have a banded orange/red tail, while the striking red panels on the male’s tail give this species its name. The coin’s reverse accompanies a coin from the Birds of Australia Series. Struck by the Perth Mint from half ounce of 99.9 percent pure silver in proof quality and is legal tender under the Australian Currency Act of 1965.
