U.S. Modern Commemorative Coins

Authorized by acts of Congress, the modern commemorative coin program began in 1982 with the issuance of the George Washington commemorative Half Dollar. Since that time, the United States Treasury has raised over a half a billion dollars in surcharges in order to fund multiple projects like the Vietnam War Memorial, preserve historical sites like George Washington's home, support various Olympic programs, and much more. Modern commemoratives have been issued in Half Dollar and One Dollar copper-nickel and silver coins and in Five and Ten Dollar gold coins.
