[1892-1916] Barber Quarters

Designed by Charles Barber, the sixth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, Barber Quarters were issued from 1892 until 1916. The bust of Liberty was patterned after the French coins of the 1870s, designed by Eugène André Oudiné. Barber quarters are notable for featuring two different types of stars: six-pointed stars on the obverse and five-pointed stars on the reverse. The mintmark can be found on the reverse under the eagle’s tail feathers. The Barber quarter was struck at four different mints: Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans and Denver.
