Dollar Coins

First suggested on July 6th, 1785 by Thomas Jefferson in a pamphlet to the Continental Congress, it would be nine years before the first dollar coin was coined by the United States Mint in 1794. The coin was authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792 which authorized the creation of the US Mint. The word dollar was a loose version of the German thaler and the Spanish 8 Reales, also known as the “Piece of Eight,” which was commonly used throughout the country well into the 19th Century. Between 1792 and 1935, almost 900,000,000 silver dollars were issued by the United States Treasury.
