Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Seated Half Dime was minted at both the Philadelphia and New Orleans mints and issued from 1837 until 1873 when it was replaced by the base metal Nickel. The series is divided in to four varieties; Variety 1, the "No Stars on Obverse" issued from 1837 to 1838, Variety 2, the "Stars on Obverse" from 1838 to 1853, Variety 3, the "Arrows at Date" variety from 1853 until 1855 when the series reverted back to Variety 2. Finally, Variety 4 coins were issued from 1860 until 1873 when the Half Dime was relegated to history in favor of the new base metal nickel.
