Error Cents

An error coin is a coin that was not manufactured correctly by the issuing mint. Mint errors come in a variety of different forms and range from minor errors that can hardly be seen with the naked eye to spectacular errors that cause one to pause and wonder how it could have happened. Not to be confused with mint errors are coins that exhibit post-mint damage or coins that are specifically altered, such as “magician’s coins”, a coin that purportedly has two heads or two tails. Since the way minting presses are designed so that it is impossible to insert two obverse or reverse dies simultaneously, we know that “magician’s coins” are not mint errors. The value of mint errors depends on the scarcity of the particular error, with the more spectacular errors fetching thousands of dollars in the collector market, while an off-center struck cent can be readily found for just a few dollars.
