I thought I had seen everything in the field of non-circulating legal tender (NCLT) coins, and then I came across this one. Born Eric Weisz on March 24, 1874 in Hungary, Harry moved to the United States when he was four years old. Fascinated by magic from an early age, he took the stage name of Harry Houdini after a French magician Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin. Not a instant success, Harry spent several years traveling with small circuses while perfecting his craft. He soon became known for his escapes from police handcuffs and jail cells as well as his ability to get out of straight-jackets and locked cages while totally submerged. By age 40, Houdini was one of the most recognized magicians in the United States. Unfortunately, his life was cut short when he died on October 31st, 1926 from a burst appendix. In honor of the famed magician, in 2011 the Republic of Palau authorized the issue of a special One Dollar legal tender coin.
