South Africa Tercentennial Commemorative 1952 5 Shilling Crown

$24.99

This coin commemorates the founding of the Cape by the Dutch East India Company in 1652. The ship depicted on the coin is the “Drommedaris”, flagship of Jan Van Riebeeck, the founder of Cape Town, with Table Mountain in the background. The coin was issued in 1952 while South Africa was a Union under the British Crown, which is why King George’s face is on the front of the coin. This coin was known as a half crown. In 1961 South Africa abolished the British monetary system and started using the Rand as a monetary system. This information was provided courtesy of www.blackmountaincoins.com visitor RG Scholtz.
