Vitus Jonassen Bering (1681, 1741) was a Danish-born navigator in the service of the Russian Navy, known among Russian sailors as Ivan Ivanovich Bering. He is noted for being the first European to discover Alaska and its Aleutian Islands. The Bering Strait, the Bering Sea, Bering Island, Bering Glacier and the Bering Land Bridge are named for the explorer. This beautiful two legal tender proof silver crown set was issued under authority of the Government of the British Virgin Islands in 2011. Each of the two coins was minted from 28.28 ounces of Sterling silver with a worldwide mintage limited to 5,000 sets. The reverse of one coin depicts Sundown at Sea and the reverse of the second coin depicts Vitus Bering, his ship and a gilded image of the Bering St. Peter Monument.
