Aurelian was proclaimed Emperor by his troops upon the death of Claudius II. During his reign of only five years he completely restored the Roman Empire to its former extent. In addition to his military successes Aurelian gave a great deal of attention to domestic affairs and began to build a fortified wall around Rome.
