(update 8/19/2013) Devotion, by wildlife artist and sculptor Kitty Cantrell, is a wonderful tribute to the wolf. This 9″ tall multi-dimensional sculpture can be appreciated from many different angles. The front angle is a powerful view of a wolf’s face and as you rotate around the sculpture you are captivated by the two hand-painted metal wolves which can be seen howling in the morning sun in a ritual that has existed since the beginning of time. Award-winning artist Kitty Cantrell is best known for her striking sculpture of North American wildlife. Intricately designed and detailed, her sculptures capture the true expressions of animals that have never known human touch. Wolves, eagles and humpback whales are just a few of the subjects this native Californian has chosen to sculpt since beginning her professional career. Cantrell believes that the art she creates is a tool for spreading a deeper understanding of the Earth’s creatures. “If my sculptures can make people think about wildlife” Kitty says,”then maybe they will feel compelled to help protect it. After spending many hours researching her subject, Cantrell produces a rough sculpture out of the soft clay to check for composition and form. Once satisfied with the results, she forms a master sculpture from which the final mold will be made. Fine pewter is used as a base for the sculpture which is covered with various precious metals and tinted with actual hot-torched patinas.
