Conder Token – Hiders Hawkhurst – Halfpenny – 1794 – Kent – Fine – Issued by Charles Hider, a freeholder in Hawkhurst. Note the C.H. monogram as well as the spelling of Hawkhurst. The name Hawkhurst is derived from Old English heafoc hyrst, meaning a wooded hill frequented by hawks. In 1254, the name was recorded as Hauekehurst and by 1278 it was often shown as Haukhurst. By 1610 it had changed to Hawkherst, which then evolved into the current spelling.
