Diameter: 68mm, Weight: 162 grams or 5.21 oz. Jules Romains’ [Louis Henri Jean Farigoule (August 26, 1885 – August 14, 1972)] masterpiece is the massive, 14 year, 27 volume epic novel, Les Hommes de bonne volonté (Men of Good Will) written between 1933 and 1946). This work is the crown jewel of the Unanimist literary movement of the early 20th century, a movement which saw meaning arising through collective consciousness and collective action rather than through the normative antagonist/protagonist relationship. In Les Hommes de bonne volonté are presented successive historical events, domestic scenes and criminal tales. The two Verdun volumes at the centre of the work have been called “visions of the soul of a world at war”. The “men of good will” referred to in the title are those members of society who preserve their humane outlook and willingness to see the humanity of others despite the ravages of war, murder, vanity, ambition and chaos.
