Hi Mercury,
The U.S. Mint is offering a refund on the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Silver Dollar with the accompanying pouch made by the Shawnee Nation United Remnant Band of Ohio because they are not an officially recognized Indian tribe by state or Federal authorities.

Personally, if I had a coin set that the mint was recalling, I would keep it.
Here is some information on the coin. ?The Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Silver Dollar was designed by United States Mint sculptor/engraver Donna Weaver. The obverse depicts Captains Lewis and Clark on a stream bank planning another day of exploration. Lewis is seen holding his rifle in one hand and his journal in the other. The reverse features two feathers to represent the many American Indian cultures touched by the Corps of Discovery. It also features an image of the original Jefferson Peace Medal presented to American Indian nations during the expedition on behalf of President Jefferson, surrounded by 17 stars representing the number of states in the Union in 1804. This coin was available in both proof and uncirculated conditions and had maximum mintage limit of 500,000 coins.?
I have not been able to find exact mintage numbers yet.
Hope this helps,
Jim.

I would hang onto any Lewis & Clark pieces affected by the recall. It could become a true numismatic rarity.

There's quite a few Native American medal-coin issues listed in Krause's 'Unusual World Coins'.

I think that they are sold as souvenirs on the reservations to raise money.

You'd be mad to send anything in that has been subjected to a recall. The demand for such items can shoot right through the roof.

Aidan.
