Hey Guys,

A friend of mine wants me to sell some old coins on ebay (from 1900 to 1936). But they look all dirty and possibly oxidized (i don't know much about this stuff). Should I clean them before I sell them on ebay? If so, how should I clean the coins? Thanks.

Hi Adam, fancy meeting you here.
Cleaning a coin is like giving it the kiss of death, or more appropriately, the scarlet letter; because everyone is going to know it is cleaned and avoid it like the plaque. Or worse, offer way below value because the coin has been rendered worthless.
Cleaning a coin is best left in the hands of a trained professional.
That being understood, what kind of coins are they? What is there metal content?
It might be best to post a list of the coins/years to see if I can help in some way.
Even thou I believe you just uttered a four letter word, I will definitely point you in the right direction.

J.

Thanks for the response. I talked to my dad and he said the same thing: don't clean the coins. He sells a lot of stuff on ebay, but I wanted to see what the coin community would say. Guess I won't clean them.

Not sure what metals the coins are. They are buffalo nickels and such from 1900 to 1940.

Thanks for the help.

Adam

Just so you know:
The [-- login to view link --] ran from 1883-1913 (5 known) and was composed of Copper-Nickel, 5.0000 g?s worth.
The [-- login to view link --] 1913, was also 5.0000 g of Copper-Nickel.
The Buffalo standing on a line, 1913-1938, was also 5.0000 g of Copper-Nickel.
The [-- login to view link --] 1938-1942, was composed of (you guessed it) 5.0000 g of Copper-Nickel.
The 1942P-1945S had a composition of Copper-Silver-Manganese, 0.350 g Silver / .0563 oz ASW.
