Please can someone explain to me why this coin's value is so low? Japan has a fairly strong economy and to me it having a poor currency doesn't make sense

Well, I don't think that Japan chooses or wants the Yen value to be low. It is a result of global economics. Japan having a lower Yen can be helpful at times for the US when purchasing items from Japan. This means that all of the technological products that we buy from Japan will be at a cheaper rate.

I don't really know much about it but I think that Japan's economy has not been doing very well lately. Back in the 80's Japan owned the technology market but now they are competing with other countries like China and they are not the techno super power they once were. IMO Japan is on the verge of a comeback and I expect to see the value of the Yen rise incredibly.

i know that most of Japan's economy was crumbling recently, however i hardly think that it is as low as that suggests... the yen is almost worthless even compared to a penny

i think currency is basically total worth divided by coinage avaliable, there are soo many yens around that the value of 1 is very small, were there less the value would be more.

fair neough then, so why doesn't the japanese government go and burn about 50% of the yen in circulation, and not print any more, meaning the value would rocket?

Ya exactely they have to do that, but what will happen to the peoples that live over there, wont they suffer too much, so the government has to think 1st about those peoples.
