hello to all who follow me into this forum and i hope to hear from many of you on the following subject. we all know the existing (and universally accepted) grading system but why is it that the difference between ms-69 and ms-70 coins can, in some cases, can be in the multiple of thousands of dollars when most (if not all dealers) will tell you that the difference is undetectable to the average collector? i watch a popular coin show on t.v. on a regular basis but refuse to buy from them, 1) because of the prices and 2) because i got taken to the cleaners by them three years ago on some franklin "sliders". they took the coins back and refunded my money BUT these people seem to be driving the hobby to the top end of the chart and insinuating that those of us who still collect "raw" coins are missing the boat.
i do not wish to denegrate ngc or pcgs but these folks just seem to me to be turning this hobby (which i have enjoyed for 50 years) into a high end investment portfolio. all responses will be answered. just understand that if the whole hobby comes down on me here it may take awhile. greg. Idea

I agree that the difference between an MS-69 and MS-70 is imperceptible to the average collector (or dealer), except when it comes to price. My theory is that the "big boys" submit thousands of American Slver Eagles (as an example), and the grading service agrees to grade a minute percentage as 70s, with the rest comming in at 69. I know that nobody will admit to it, but it's my theory and I'm sticking to it. Very Happy

hi all, now i am finding that the "coin dealers" are selling certified first strikes at a premium. where does this stop? to me first strikes are within the first 100 coins struck, not the first 50,000! how often does the mint change dies and for what reasons? (other than wear)? it seems to me that the hobby is being pushed to levels that only the rich can afford. i will keep collecting coins that i can hold in my hand, thank you! lets here from the rest of you. greg Rolling Eyes
