Israel?s currency is the New Israeli Shekel (NIS). It replaced the old Shekel in 1985. Its ISO 4217 code is ILS. One NIS is made up of 100 Agorot (singular= 1 Agora). The symbol for the NIS is (₪) which is a combination of the first Hebrew letters of the words Shekel (ש) and Chadash (ח). There are bills of 20, 50, 100, and 200 NIS. Coins exist of 5, 10, and 50 Agorot, and 1, 5, and 10 NIS. On May 3, 2006, the NIS exchange rate stood at 5.66311 NIS per one euro and at 4.48990 NIS per one US Dollar. Since January 1, 2003, the NIS has been a freely convertible currency. Today 1 US Dollar (USD) = 4.46172 Israeli New Shekel (NIS)

I have been amazed by the fact that Israeli coins can be purchased in the secondary market so economically. The Israeli Mint consistently comes out with a variety of new issues with distinctive design characteristics that can be appreciated by collectors of world coins everywhere.
