The first legal tender coins struck from Titanium were issued by Gibraltar in the year 2000 to celebrate the Millennium. Since then, other countries, notably the British Virgin Islands and the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands have issued legal tender coins struck from titanium. The coins are lighter than similar size coins struck in other metals. The dies used to make titanium coins have to be considerably harder than normal dies in order to strike the titanium planchets without disintegrating. On a positive note, it is fairly easy to create planchets in any color desired by the mint.
