Coelacanth is the common name for an order of fish that includes the oldest living lineageof jawed fish known to date. The coelacanths were believed to have been extinct since the end of the Cretaceous period, until one was found off the east coast of South Africa, off the Chalumna River in 1938. Since 1938, coelacanths have been found in the Comoros,Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, and in Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park inSouth Africa. This Five Francs coin was issued by Comoros in 1985 and would make a great gift for your favorite ichthyologist (one who studies fishes).?
