Civil War Banknotes, Coins, Medals and Memorabilia

Four different types of banknotes were issued during the Civil War. In 1862 the first United States banknotes were issued as Legal Tender Notes and were used throughout the Union. The Confederate States of America began issuing their own currency in 1861 and did so until 1864. Simultaneously, Southern States were issuing their own state-backed currency and other commercial enterprises were also issuing currency. Although there was a general distrust for paper money, there were not a lot of alternatives available and the practice of issuing interest bearing notes as currency had a certain appeal. As of the end of the Civil War, all Confederate issued currency became worthless.
