Son of a prosperous Belgian family, Joseph Christiaens was an engineer, racing car driver and aviator. After studying engineering, began his adventures with the new machines which at the turn of the 20th century were fascinating young people all over the world. On March, 16th, 1911 he completed the first flight over Singapore. In 1987 the Singapore Mint struck this five ounce silver medal from .999 fine silver to commemorate the event.
