Its size and power enable it to dive to depths of up to one thousand feet, where it can stay searching for food for up to twenty minutes before surfacing for air. Common in the Australian territories of Antarctica, the Emperor Penguin mates at the same place with the same partner each winter. The male penguin then incubates the egg for two months in the fierce Antarctic winter and does not eat during this time. After the egg hatches, the female will return from feeding at sea and care for the chick while the male hunts for food.
