The call "Iceberg, straight ahead" received the reply "Thank You" from the bridge. Shortly before midnight on April 14, 1912, the steamship RMS Titanic struck an iceberg on her starboard side on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York, and sank in the North Atlantic, with a loss of over 1,500 lives. At the time, the Titanic was the largest moving object on the planet and was touted as being unsinkable. The drama of the sinking ship became the subject of many books, technical literature and speculation. Numerous movies have been made about the tragic event, spreading the myth of the Titanic around the world. In September 1985, oceanographer Robert Ballard located the wreck of the Titanic at a latitude 41 degrees 44' North and a longitude of 49 degrees 55' West, in a depth of 12,500 feet or 3,840 meters. Diving robots were used to take the first pictures, which were then published. The RMS Titanic Corporation holds the sole rights to salvage items from the wreck. A total of seven diving expeditions have been mounted, bringing to the surface more than 6000 memorable artifacts. During the campaign in the year 2000, sizeable pieces of coal were salvaged from the wreck as well. One of these pieces was acquired to give interested people the opportunity to own a real commemorative item from the Titanic. The location of the piece of coal in the bunker section of the ship is depicted on the Sterling Silver coin (also available on this website) and the small gold coin, which comes with a Certificate of Authenticity as shown.
