Issued by Cuba in 1995, this brilliant, uncirculated world coin features a prominent and fanciful portrait of Captain Kidd and is one in a series of 6 world coins of Cuba that commemorate the "Piratas del Caribe" (Pirates of the Caribbean). Reputed to be the most bloodthirsty of all pirates, Kidd earned his reputation primarily from the intentional exaggerations of the British East Indian Company whom he inadvertently robbed of one of their most richly laden ships. His first act of "piracy" was a deception of a British Royal Naval officer who had demanded a portion of his crew as "enlistees". Kidd surrendered himself willingly in an attempt to refute the many tales of atrocities. Regardless he was hanged (twice in fact) and his body gibbeted over the Thames for two years.
