Beautiful high-releif medal, 39 millimeters in diameter, struck for the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States (AAU). The date shown on the medal is MDCCCLXXXVIII (1888). The back of the medal has the legend CHAMPION but was not engraved. The ribbon and clasp are intact. Great piece of amateur athletic memorabilia.
