Issued to commemorate the Dutch Gerard Callenburgh-class Destroyer, H.N.M.S. Isaac Sweers. This destroyer, still unfinished, was towed on May 10th, 1940 to England and was there completed. Gibraltar chose to honor this proud vessel likely due to its extensive service protecting convoys and transports to and from England's gateway to the Mediterranean. HNMS Isaac Sweers also was employed in Operation Perpetual in which it and seven other vessels accompanied the aircraft-carriers HMS Ark Royal and HMS Argus in their supply of Hurricane fighters to Malta. At the end of 1941 HNMS Isaac Sweers was put into service in the allies anti-submarine campaign in the Mediterranean. In January of 1942 she was dispatched to the Dutch East Indies. By October she was back in Gibraltar as the Dutch had lost their Pacific possessions to Japan. On the 12th of November of 1942 she was in a mission to rescue survivors of troop transport New Zeeland, which had been sunk by U-380, when she was sunk by German U-boat U-431.
