Probably the best known and loved of all the animals on the Endangered Species list, the Giant Panda is China's national symbol. In China, the panda is referred to as the "Giant Cat Bear" and is believed to have magical powers that can ward off natural disasters and evil spirits. The panda's main diet consists of bamboo, and because of a very inefficient digestive system, they must consume large quantities of bamboo on a daily basis in order to survive. They generally feed twelve to sixteen hours a day and consume as much as eighty pounds of bamboo shoots in a day. The giant panda bear only exists today in six small areas located in inland China. The habitat, suitable for the bamboo on which it survives, is a cold, damp coniferous forest. The elevation ranges from 4,000 to 11,000 feet high. It is estimated that there are somewhere around 700 and 1,000 giant pandas still alive in the wild.
