One of the more unusual coins minted under authority of the government of the Somali Republic. This unusual guitar-styled coin (one in a series of five) is the only of the series to be named for a musician, namely Gary Glitter of Glitter Rock fame. While the style of the guitar depicted is a Glitter guitar the naming of the coin makes an association that now proves somewhat notorious. 61 year old Gary Glitter, the 1970's singer of "I'm the Leader of the Gang" has the dubious distinction of being the first foreigner to be tried and now jailed in post-war Vietnam for a sex crime. Now serving a three year prison term in Vietnam for molesting 11 year old and a 12 year old girls. Mr. Glitter has added another layer of interest to this collector's piece. The Glitter guitar was so named because of the adaptation of celluloid to replace the previously standard lacquering process on instruments. The celluloid detailed finish had a pearloid pattern and these guitars became known as glitter guitars in the United States. Now this peice would make a great gift for that guitar enthusiast in your life!
