ANCIENT - Roman - Marcus Junius Brutus - Gold Stater - 44BC - without Brutus' Monogram (Koson type) - Brutus became the infamous murderer of Julius Caesar at the Roman Senate on the Ides of March in 44 B.C. (March 15) because he thought of himself as a defender of the Roman Republic. Brutus killed Caesar to prevent him from toppling the Roman system of government that had allowed Rome to prosper for centuries, especially in the times of Caesar, who conquered Gaul and Spain. Brutus came from a famous family of Roman patriots that had a history of defending the Republic from potential dictators dating back to 509 B.C. This coin was made following Caesar’s death and after Brutus and Cassius Longinus fled to the eastern empire. Brutus was in Greece to raise a huge army of seventeen legions to fight the combined armies of Marc Antony and Octavian (later known as Augustus). It is believed that a Thracian king named Koson was the first to strike this type of coin. Thrace was under the rule of Brutus from 45 B.C. and after entering Thrace, Brutus had these coins struck with his monogram to pay the legionaries who expected to be paid immediately after a battle. With his troops of 80,000 soldiers, Brutus fought against Octavian and Marc Anthony - and lost the battle at Philippi. The following day he killed himself with the sword of his dear friend Strato.
