The Government of the British Virgin Islands has approved the release of the first-ever Red Titanium coin which depicts the world's rarest stamp and also commemorates the 125th Anniversary of the Life of Sir Rowland Hill. Regarded as the rarest stamp in the world and also one of the most expensive, the stamp was issued in limited numbers in British Guiana in 1856. The stamp is not perforated, printed in black on magenta paper and features a sailing ship with the colony's motto. The issue of this stamp happened by chance when an anticipated arrival of local stamps didn't materialize. The local postmaster authorised the printer who published the local paper to print an emergency issue of three stamps. However, the postmaster was not pleased with the end result and to protect against forgery, all the stamps had to be autographed by the post office clerks. Only one copy of the stamp is known to exist and this was sold in 1980 for $935,000, making it one of the most expensive stamps ever. Now you can own a commemorative coin for a fraction of that price.
