One of the more unusual coins minted under authority of the government of the Somali Republic. Shaped like an electric guitar with enameling in red, white and silver on the reverse, this coin marks the 50th anniversary of the Stratocaster electric guitar. Leo Fender (1909-1991) was the first to mass produce solid-bodied electric guitars. Fender's revolutionary 3 pickup Stratocaster model was introduced in 1953 and quickly became the most popular model electric guitar. The Stratocaster's design and appeal has changed little over the years. It is the most copied solid body guitar and is still the most popular. This coin would make a great gift for that guitar enthusiast in your life! P.S. I have now been emailed by two individuals who claim the guitar is not a Fender Stratocaster but a Gibson Les Paul, or Les Paul, Jr. I am not a guitar expert, so Ill let you make the call. Either way, its a great addition to any collection of world coins.
