On the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II's visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo, the nation commemorates his visit with this four coin, historic, legal tender issue, depicting different milestones in his career. Karol Josef Wojtyla was ordained as a priest on November 1st, 1946, became a Cardinal on June 28th, 1967 and was elected Pope by the College of Cardinals on October 16th, 1978. During his papal reign, Pope John Paul II made more foreign trips than all previous popes, many to places no other pope had ever visited. His travels resulted in unprecedented progress toward uniting the world in peace. In 1980 he was the first pope to visit the Democratic Republic of Congo.
