Mon Sep 24, 2007 10:00 pm selling coin - worth? |
|
|
I am wanting/needing to sell a gold coin my Dad gave me.
On the front it says:
FRANC.IOS.I.D.G.AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR
back:
HVNGAR.BOHEM.GAL. (4) LOD.ILL.REX A.A.1915
This coin is in perfect shape
Any information would be great
Any place to sell would be better!
Thanks!
Fran

Hello and welcome to the forum texn63.
It would help if you posted pictures of the actual coin you are trying to sell. Front and back. If they are not close up and clear, do not even bother.
This will show everyone what condition it is in and what type of coin it is, where it is from...etc,etc.
No sane person will buy a gold coin sight unseen from someone they do not know.
I look forward to seeing the pictures.

Your coin, if it is genuine, is an Austrian four-ducat piece.
All of the 1915 4-ducats are official restrikes, meaning they were struck by the Austrian mint, but not necessarily in 1915 as the date suggests (they kept right on striking them after 1915, with the date "frozen"). So the coin is not as old as the date on it would have you believe.
The bad news is:
As restrikes, these have no numismatic (collector) value.
BUT...
The good news is:
They do contain the same amount of gold as earlier 4-ducat pieces, so they DO have bullion value. They are popular in jewelry, too. I have always liked them.
They were struck in .986 Gold (98.6% pure), and their pure gold content amounts to 0.4430 oz.
To compute your coin's current melt value, or "spot" price, multiply the current spot price of gold (which you can look up on kitco.com or elsewhere) by the coin's weight of .4430 oz.
As of this posting, gold is roughly at $725/oz, give or take, so if you take the $725 spot price and multiply it by .4430, you have $321.18 worth of gold in that coin.
IF it is real. I have not heard of many fakes of these particular coins, but it is possible.

Great answer Rob. However, to find the spot price, all he has to do is scroll to the top of this page. We do make it easy for our visitors

Hi,
I have this coin as a pendant in perfect condition.
Does this make it more valuable, or still just weight value?
Thankyou in advance for any information.

When coins are put in bezels, it actually takes away from their numismatic (collector) value. The only additional value would be the value of the gold in the bezel (if it is made of gold). Otherwise, the remarks in the earlier posts would apply.

Thanks, that answers my question.
