In 1986 the United States Government had a large surplus of silver bullion, so it began striking American Silver Eagle Dollars to compete with silver bullion coins produced by other countries. Bullion coins are nearly pure and are a popular way to own precious metals. Since its introduction in 1986, the American Silver Eagle Dollar has become the predominant silver bullion coin in the world.

The American Silver Eagles bear their year of mintage and the uncirculated versions cannot be purchased by collectors directly from the United States Mint.

The front or obverse of the American Silver Eagle Dollar features a recreation of the classical “Liberty Walking” motif --- designed by the renowned sculptor A.A. Weinman in the early 20th century and originally used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar issued between 1916 and 1947. The reverse of the American Silver Eagle Dollar, designed by John Mercanti, bears a rendition of a heraldic eagle and the inscription “1 OZ. FINE SILVER – ONE DOLLAR”.

The official U.S. Bullion coin is composed of 99.93% pure silver, with less than one percent copper added for hardness and durability. The coin weighs 31.101 grams and has a diameter of 40.6 millimeters, which is slightly larger than traditional United States silver dollars issued in the past.
